Castleton- Wayne V. Van Amburgh, 82, of Castleton, New York, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 27, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of service, generosity, laughter, love, and an enduring legacy.
Born and raised in Albany, New York, Wayne attended St. Joseph's Catholic School before proudly enlisting in the United States Navy at the age of 18. Although he served for only two years, his commitment to his fellow sailors and the United States Navy never wavered. During his service he was highlighted by the times union for being the only sailor serving aboard the USS Albany as an Albanian.
Wayne began his career as a skilled mason before transitioning into purchasing management, where he spent decades working for a variety of companies including BASF. He had an uncanny ability to negotiate a better deal on just about anything and genuinely believed there wasn't a price that couldn't be improved. If there was a better deal to be made, Wayne was determined to find it-and more often than not, he did. Family and friends affectionately knew that no purchase was ever final until Wayne had negotiated it one more time.
Outside of work, Wayne found joy in the outdoors. As his family grew, he became an active member of the Starcraft Camping Association, creating many memories around campfires and family adventures. He was also an avid hunter and dedicated countless hours to teaching others as a New York State Hunter Safety Instructor through the Castleton Fish & Game Club for fifty years. He believed deeply in responsible hunting, conservation, and passing his knowledge on to future generations.
Wayne's passion for service didn't end with his time in the Navy. Decades later, he found another way to continue serving those who had worn the uniform beside him.
In 1990, Wayne founded the USS Albany Association, building from the ground up, a lasting organization dedicated to preserving the history and camaraderie of those who served aboard the ships that proudly carried the name Albany. Nearly four decades later, the association continues to thrive, a reflection of Wayne's vision, dedication, and enduring commitment to those he proudly called shipmates. For Wayne, preserving the history of the USS Albany wasn't simply a project-it was a promise to honor the men who served alongside him and to ensure their stories would never be forgotten.
In 2024, after years of planning and unwavering determination, Wayne saw one of his greatest dreams become a reality with the dedication of the USS Albany Association Memorial in Rensselaer, New York. Today, the memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the sailors who served aboard the ships bearing the USS Albany name, ensuring their service and sacrifice will continue to be remembered for generations to come.
Wayne was also the kind of man who appreciated life's simple pleasures: a hot cup of coffee to start the day, a cold Coors Light shared with family and friends, and good conversation, especially while sharing one of his many Navy stories with lifelong friends.
Having called Castleton home for nearly 60 years, Wayne was also a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where his faith remained an important part of his life.
He never met a stranger, was always willing to lend a helping hand, and was the neighbor everyone hoped to have. Whether fixing something, offering advice, or simply checking in, Wayne quietly made the lives of those around him better. Whether through his service, his friendships, his faith, or simply the example he set each day, Wayne's life was one of quiet leadership and unwavering generosity.
To know Wayne was to know someone who never hesitated to help another person. Whether you were family, friend, neighbor, or stranger, he made you feel like you mattered.
Above all else, Wayne was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Judy Van Amburgh; his daughter, Megan (Ryan Engelhardt) Van Amburgh-Engelhardt; his cherished grandson, Greyson; and his son, Ryan Van Amburgh.
Wayne was preceded in death by his loving parents, Carmella (Bucci) Van Amburgh and Richard V. Van Amburgh.
Wayne will be remembered for his unwavering sense of service, his generous heart, and his ability to leave every place-and every person-a little better than he found them. His legacy will live on through his family, friends, fellow veterans, and the countless lives he touched throughout his 82 years.
Fair winds and following seas, Wayne. Your watch is complete.
Funeral services will be held, with a celebration of life, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Wayne's memory may consider making a contribution in his name to Saratoga National Cemetery.
