Maria N. Rieben, 94 formerly of Castleton, died December 23, 2025, at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Maria was born on February 8, 1931, in Utica, NY, the daughter of the late Emil and Catherine (Scully) Neumann. She was educated in the Utica School system and subsequently employed by Utica Mutual Insurance Company until her marriage.  Maria married Bob Rieben on May 7, 1955. They relocated to Albany. As a newlywed, Mrs. Rieben was a member of the Junior Women’s League of Albany and she volunteered at the Brady Maternity Hospital.  In 1962 the couple settled in Castleton where they were the proprietors of Castleton Pharmacy until their retirement in 1992.

Maria enjoyed annual trips to either Wildwood, NJ, Ogunquit, ME or Blue Mountain Lake, NY. In her later years, there were trips to Longboat Key, FL. Though she loved to travel, Maria was happiest at home with her family on Benedict Street in Castleton.  While living in Castleton, Maria was active in the community. She served on the Village Zoning Board. She was a Village Hall volunteer, and a member of the Garden Club.  Mrs. Rieben was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church where she was a member of the Rosary Society. She served on the Liturgy Committee, was a lay minister and a teacher of grade two CCD, which she particularly enjoyed.  Until her passing, Maria was a member of the Sacred Heart Mustard Seed Group and the Castleton Senior Citizens.  In recent years, she enjoyed occasional afternoons at Schodack Island Park where she visited with friends or read a book.

Maria is survived by her sons, Stephen (Sue-Ellen) of Guilford, CT, Timothy of Jamaica, VT and Gregory of Providence, RI. She is also survived by grandchildren; Christian (Amanda) of Darien, CT and Alexandra of Charleston, SC; three great-grandchildren, Hadley, Mirielle and Sadie of Darien, CT. Her sister Catherine Roach of New Hartford, NY, two nephews and several cousins also survive her.  Mrs. Rieben was predeceased by her husband Bob, her daughter-in-law Dawn, her sister Gertrude Manch, two nephews and a niece.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Church, 3 Catholic Way, Castleton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church. Online condolences may be expressed at castletonfuneralhome.com.
