Brother James Regis DeTemple, CSC was born January 3, 1941, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Son of Regis R. DeTemple, and Mary Evelyn (Keenan) DeTemple, Bro. James is survived by his sister Mary Lynn Hartman, his brother Donald P. DeTemple, nieces and nephews, as well as the members of his religious community, and faithful friends.
He pronounced his first vows as a Brother in the Congregation of Holy Cross on August 23, 1959, and his final vows on August 23, 1962, and earned his degrees from St. Edward’s University in Austin TX and Fairfield University in CT. James was a noted teacher of social studies, earning advanced certificates from Catholic University and Duquesne University, and receiving a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
For 45 years Brother James faithfully taught countless youth in various schools and sponsored institutions of the Congregation of Holy Cross in New York, West Haven and Waterbury Connecticut, Wilmington Delaware, Forestville Maryland and Austin Texas.
Those who have lived and taught with him, and students who were fortunate to have had him as their teacher, know that he took his vocation as educator seriously and worked intensely to master his beloved American Studies and English.
In 2012, due to health issues, Brother James moved to St. Joseph Center, Valatie, New York. He had come full circle as St. Joseph Center was where he professed his first and final vows. “Getting old is not for sissies,” he would frequently tell the Care Staff.
On June 12, 2023, James died peacefully at St. Joseph Center, Valatie, New York, surrounded by members of his religious community and the staff of St. Joseph Center.
The Brothers and Priests living at St. Joseph Center would like to extend their profound gratitude to all the Staff of St. Joseph Center for their kindness, care, patience and devotion to our brother.
