Horseheads, NY-Elisabeth Stearns McKnight, age 98, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Appleridge Senior Living, Horseheads, New York. She was born on July 13, 1916 at “Brookside”, Castleton on Hudson, New York, the daughter of the late Honorable John Wood McKnight and Gertrude Griffiths Longyear.

Elisabeth, known to many as “Betty”, was a career employee of 47 years with the New York State Department of Labor in Albany, Troy, Hudson, Monticello, Corning, Binghamton, and Elmira, New York. She retired in 1984 from the New York State Employment Service in Elmira. Elisabeth was a member and Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Corning Painted Post Chapter, and District Deputy Grand Matron Steuben District 1984. She was a member of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Emmaus Shrine #17 in Hornell and served as Worthy High Priestess in 1993. She was a member of the Corning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Corning Business and Professional Women's Club, and the Glen Region Sports Car Club of America. Elisabeth was an avid bowler for many years in the Corning area having been inducted in the Corning Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1992, and she was known for her work with the Junior Bowlers. Elisabeth volunteered at Corning Hospital, the Benjamin Patterson Inn, and the Public Health Care Clinic in Corning, New York.

She is survived by dear friend, Barbara Clarke, whose compassion and care were such a comfort to Elisabeth in her final years. She is also survived by cousins Joan Otty Mackay of Largo, Florida, Steven Ennis (Debbie) of St. Petersburg, Florida, Lorie Ennis-Pikula (Walter) of Stamford, Vermont, Wendy Ennis Ashline (David) of Latham, N.Y., Colleen Ennis Chatterton (Bill) of Wake Forest, N.C., Edward Ryan (Amy) of Buford, Ga., and Bruce Fuhrman of Camarillo, Ca. Elisabeth is also survived by her caring friends and neighbors, Bill and Terry Clark. She will also be missed by the many wonderful and attentive caregivers at Appleridge Senior Living with a special thank you to Faith Schroder who always went above and beyond to care for Elisabeth.

A memorial service will be held at Ray Funeral Service, Inc. 59 Seaman Avenue, Castleton, NY on Friday, November 14, 2014 at 1:00pm. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Castleton on Hudson.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make contributions in memory of Elisabeth may send them to the Castleton Public Library, 85 S. Main Street, Castleton, New York 12033 , Southern Tier Corning Library, 9424 Scott Road, Painted Post, New York, 14870 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
