Dean Smith

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Dean A Smith, of Castleton, formerly of Constantia, NY, on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, after battling cancer.

Dean was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son and friend, born in Albuquerque, NM to Gregg K. Smith and Irene C. (Covert) Smith and grew up by the ocean in California, which will always have a special place in his heart.

Dean served 4 years in the U.S. Navy where he achieved the rank of (OS2) E5 Operations Specialist Second Class. He was very proud of his service and his time on the Aircraft Carrier USS John F Kennedy CV-67, where his deployments took him around the world.

Following his military service, Dean began a career in the airline industry at Syracuse International Airport working for Empire, Piedmont, US Airways and retiring from American Airlines. He moved to Castleton, from Constantia, shortly after. He carried his passion for travel into retirement flying planes via flight simulator and spending time with his family and friends at his camp in the Adirondacks.

Dean cherished his family above all and is survived by his loving wife, Wendy (Stern) Smith; his beloved children, Brandon (Katie) Smith, Alex (Sarika) Smith and Miranda (Eric) Sywulski; and his treasured grandchildren, Mason and Madison Smith, Aiden and Austin Smith, and Owen and Theo Sywulski; his mother, Irene Smith; and sister-in-law, Lori Markowski.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

In honor of Dean's life and legacy, a funeral service will be held at the Castleton Funeral Home, 59 Seaman Ave, Castleton-On-Hudson, on September 10, 2025, at 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community Hospice, an organization that supported Dean and his family during this difficult time.
